While you may or may not be able to have a horse of your own, you can still help the wild American Mustangs by becoming a member of The Mustang Nation.

Off the range, there are more than 31,000 wild horses and burros that are fed and cared for at short-term (corral) and long-term (pasture) holding facilities. All wild horses and burros in holding, like those roaming the public rangelands, are protected by the BLM under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. In 2008, $36.2 million was spent on the wild horse and burro program, with the cost of holding and caring for these animals exceeding $27 million -- or three-fourths of the budget.

By becoming a member of The Mustang Nation, you will be supporting public awareness through education, increasing gentling and training programs, funding training scholarships and providing adoption assistance. With these efforts, more Mustangs will be able to adopted and the burden on goverment holding facilities and range environments will decrease - improving the quality of life for thousands of mustangs across the country.

Here's How You Can Help:

  • Donate - $5 a month or a One Time/Any Amount donation - whatever you can manage be it a large or small donation will make a difference.

  • Volunteer - we are always looking for a few good folks to help us at events across the country.

  • Spread the Word - put your social network to work and shout your support for mustangs from the rooftops of your web site, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace pages.

  • Adopt - if you are able to provide the shelter, feeding and care that a mustang requires consider opening your heart and your barn to a mustang in need. Give these majestic animals a purpose, put them to work and reap the rewards for years to come. You can even enter a special Mustang only competition with your new horse. Held in various locations across the country, Extreme Mustang Makeover supports adoption efforts and allows professional and backyard horse trainers alike to compete for prize money, prizes and bragging rights. See the BLM web site for a full list of events and adoption dates.
